Tyler Perry, the renowned US actor and filmmaker, has decided to halts his ambitious plans for an $800 million expansion of his Atlanta studio.
The reason? He was left awestruck by the capabilities of OpenAI’s latest video model, Sora.
Perry revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that despite hearing murmurs about Sora’s development, it wasn’t until he witnessed the recent demonstrations that he grasped its full potential.
The impact was so profound that he immediately suspended all ongoing work on the studio expansion.
“I had gotten word over the last year or so that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it’s able to do. It’s shocking to me,” Perry expressed.
Perry voiced his concerns about the ramifications of AI technology on jobs within the film industry and advocated for regulations to safeguard employment opportunities.
He acknowledged AI’s transformative power, noting its potential to significantly slash production costs.
“I no longer would have to travel to locations. If I wanted to be in the snow in Colorado, it’s text. If I wanted to write a scene on the moon, it’s text, and this AI can generate it like nothing,” Perry remarked.
The Role of AI in Hollywood
The intersection of artificial intelligence and Hollywood has ignited debates surrounding job security and ethical considerations.
AI’s potential to create digital replicas of actors has sparked fears of replacing human talent with virtual counterparts.
Resistance to AI integration is mounting as its influence reshapes traditional roles, leading to industry-wide protests and legal battles.
SAG-AFTRA, representing over 160,000 actors, spearheaded efforts to secure equitable treatment for performers in the digital landscape.
Their recent strike yielded substantial gains, including enhanced wages, benefits, and safeguards against unauthorized digital replication.
As Hollywood grapples with the transformative impact of AI, the balancing act between innovation and ethical responsibility remains at the forefront of industry discourse.
